A protecting agent safeguards the interests of owners or charterers during voyages, sales, lay-ups, or repairs.
When you are appointed as a protecting agent, you are either appointed by the disponent owner or by the owners directly. Could also be that you protect the interest of the sub charterer. In this case the vessel is on a voyage charter most of the time or she calls to be sold/bought or laid up, repairs, bunkers etc.
